If you work in Japan, you have likely heard of Kakutei Shinkoku (annual tax return).
However, many people are unsure who actually needs to file and when it is beneficial.
Kakutei Shinkoku is not a complicated process.
In most cases, it exists to reconcile overpaid taxes and allow refunds.
Kakutei Shinkoku is the annual income tax filing process.
The standard filing period is February 16 to March 15
(some years allow an extension to the next business day).
For salaried workers, many companies complete a year-end adjustment (Nenmatsu Chousei),
which means not everyone is required to file individually.
Filing is recommended if:
Your company did not perform the year-end adjustment
You have deductions that were not reflected
You want to include medical expenses, dependents, or other deductions
Filing accurately can result in tax reductions and refunds.
Declaring parents, spouses, or children who depend on your income can significantly reduce taxes.
Even if a dependent was not included in company paperwork in December,
you can still add them through Kakutei Shinkoku.
For overseas dependents, proof of financial remittances and documentation is required.
When family medical expenses exceed a certain threshold (generally ¥100,000),
you may qualify for a deduction.
Eligible expenses include consultations, tests, hospitalization, medicines for treatment,
and public transportation to hospitals.
Keep receipts organized by family member for smooth filing.
If you purchased a home in Japan using a mortgage,
you may be eligible for tax reductions for a limited period.
The first year requires documents such as loan balance certificates
and property registration papers.
Conditions vary depending on contract year and applicable regulations.
Donations to local governments may reduce next year’s residence tax,
provided they are properly declared
(if the one-stop exception system was not used).
Premiums paid for private insurance, in addition to public insurance,
may qualify for small tax deductions.
Keep the insurance deduction certificate issued by the insurer.
When filing at a tax office or city hall, prepare:
Gensen Choshu-hyo (income statement)
Residence Card and My Number Card
Bank account details for refunds
Receipts (medical expenses, overseas remittances)
Personal seal (Inkan), if required locally
Tax data integration and cross-checking are becoming more advanced.
Overseas dependent claims are verified using remittance records.
If minimum requirements are not met, deductions may be denied later.
Avoid filing “just to try.”
Incorrect filings can lead to corrections and follow-up inquiries.
Kakutei Shinkoku is not only for specialists.
It is a legitimate way for workers to reclaim overpaid taxes.
With accurate information and timely preparation,
the process can be straightforward and reliable.
Missing the deadline may result in penalties, interest,
and delayed refunds.
Prepare early each year.
